Marking the 200th anniversary of Emily Brontë’s birth and the 100th anniversary of female suffrage in the UK, the film looks at how far society has come in terms of increasing women’s rights. This is observed through the lens of Peggy and her young baby Heath, inspired by the true story of “Black Peggy”, a late 18th Century mother seeking help from the Foundling Hospital.

‘Balls’, which was screened at Picturehouse at Fact on August 2nd, was followed by a panel conversation chaired by Bonnie Greer OBE (American-British playwright, novelist, critic and former president of the Brontë society),

‘Balls’ film director Lily Cole, Michael Stewart (winner of the Guardian’s Not-the-Booker Award and author of ll Will: The Untold Story of Heathcliff) and Simon Marsden (Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Liverpool whose research centres on Gothic fiction).
