Graphic Artist Patrick Thomas Takes Over St John’s Shopping Centre
In another of our 24 hour commissions we asked graphic artist Patrick Thomas to produce work throughout Thursday 5th April responding instantly to news headlines.

Working live in an empty unit in St John’s Shopping Centre in Liverpool City Centre, Patrick used processing and coding software, to sample, remix and mash-up live news content pulled in from a pre-selection of RSS news feeds from local and international sources.
Passers-by were encouraged to interact to enhance and distort the day’s news by contributing their own unverifiable headlines and many then waited to see their words form part of the live projections.
Real news merged with fabricated headlines, local and global, trivial and serious in a realtime experiment investigating the impact that media has on our lives.
The resulting material was projected live in St John’s Shopping Centre and broadcast as livestream via RRU News and Patrick Thomas’ Facebook and Instagram channels.
In September Patrick explored the relationship between design and politics with Anthony Burrill at the Global Design Forum: Graphics, Politics and Protest at the V & A. October saw the project relocate to Manchester as part of Design Manchester Festival, and then take flight to Serbia.
